Call for Expression of Interest
Board of Directors 2026

The Portal Youth Outreach Association (PYOA or “The Portal”) is a community-rooted nonprofit charity supporting youth in the Annapolis Valley and surrounding area.
Our organization is growing, and we are seeking individuals to join the Board of Directors in 2026.

Through a relational, strength-based approach, PYOA works alongside youth across West Hants, Kings, Annapolis and Digby Counties to help them stabilize, heal, and build independent futures. Many of the youth seeking support are experiencing homelessness, housing insecurity, mental health challenges, family breakdown and systemic barriers.

As an impact organization, the Portal Youth Outreach Association is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors that provides strategic direction, oversight, and accountability, supports the Executive Director, and advances the Association’s work across the region.

Role Overview
Directors serve 3-year renewable terms and contribute an average of 2-4 hours per month, including:

  • 5 Board meetings per year, plus the Annual General Meeting (AGM)

  • Preparation for meetings

  • Involvement in at least one (1) committee or working group

  • Occasional support for events and fundraising initiatives

This is a volunteer position, and Directors are not financially compensated for their service. This is also a governance-focused role, with the day-to-day operations led by the Executive Director and staff team.

We welcome individuals who:

  • Reside or work in West Hants, Kings County, the Annapolis Valley

  • Demonstrate a high level of professionalism, confidentiality, integrity, and sound judgment

  • Bring diverse skills, perspectives, and lived experiences

  • Are collaborative, engaged, and committed to strong governance

  • Are comfortable working in a dynamic, growth-oriented environment

  • Are motivated to contribute to their community and to work that supports youth

  • Would be willing to submit a background check if selected

Directors act as ambassadors for PYOA and contribute their skills, experience, and networks to support its ongoing success.

How to apply:
Interested individuals are invited to submit an expression of interest and CV by June 30, 2026, to boardsecretary@portalyouth.ca outlining their background and interest in joining the Board.

If you are interested in contributing but are unsure whether your experience aligns with the areas listed above, we encourage you to reach out. We value a range of perspectives and welcome conversations with individuals who are curious about board work as a way of supporting our communities.

We want to acknowledge that we are in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People. The “Treaties of Peace and Friendship” cover this territory, which Mi’kmaq WƏlastƏkwiyik (Maliseet) and Passamaquoddy Peoples first signed with the British Crown in 1726. The treaties did not deal with the surrender of lands and resources but recognized Mi’kmaq and WƏlastƏkwiyik (Maliseet) titles and established the rules for what was to be an ongoing relationship between nations.

Additionally, we would like to acknowledge that within Nova Scotia, people of African ancestry settled and contributed to the building of many formative developments, particularly in the 18th and 19th centuries; this includes the Black Loyalists who fought on the side of Britain during the American War of Independence, The Maroons, who fought and never surrendered to the Spanish and British in Jamaica and Southern American Black Refugees, who fought on the side of the British during the War of 1812.
